UPCOMING TOUR FALL 2023

FATE BELL SHELTER PICTOGRAPH GUIDED TOUR

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19

6:15 am— 6:30 pm.

LOCATION: Seminole State Canyon State Park and Historic Site, 434 Park Road 67, Comstock, TX.

Fate Bell Shelter is best known for its pictographs, which are among the best documented and best preserved of the Pecos River style. The shelter, which is approximately 150 yards long, with its greatest depth at forty feet, contains a deeply stratified rock shelter containing evidence of over 8,000 years of occupation, from the Archaic Period to the Late Prehistoric Period (ca. 7000 B.C. to A.D. 1500).

This Members Only guided tour starts at 10:00 am at Seminole Park, meeting at the Rangers Station at 9:30 am. The tour requires a walk down into the canyon and then a half mile walk to the shelter. There are steps up to the canyon wall. The tour is 90 minutes and about 1.5 miles in length. This is fairly rugged hike, described as “moderate.” Not for those with mobility or balance issues.

After the tour, Society members will lunch at a nearby restaurant before drive back to Helotes (approximately a three-hour drive).

The Society will provide water bottles. Members are encouraged to bring their own snacks.
